Brenda: The illegitimate child of the croissant and donut has made it’s way across the ocean to Sydney. The Zonut is Adriano Zumbo’s take on the famous New York cronut. Every week there’s a new flavour and we were luckily enough to get our hands on the Lime and Basil Custard Zonut topped with lime jelly and a fried basil leaf ($5).
The buttery pastry was just irresistible, laced with sugar and topped with a generous amount of icing. I was mind-blown when I bit into it and the custard oozed out – it was perfectly balanced with lime and basil. The lime jelly gave the Zonut some acidity and the fried basil really was the cherry on top.
If you are caught in the zonut hype, I advise you to get in before lunchtime because it sells out! This was our second attempt within a week but it was absolutely worth the second trek. Flavours change every Saturday and at the moment it is only available now at the Rozelle store and The Star.
