Ando: When in Newtown, I don’t often stroll along Enmore Road. Somehow I decided to walk in that direction on this particular day and came face-to-face with a very fascinating dessert store. The depiction of a 50s American diner caught my eye and I had to enter! I was amazed at a waitress’s effort in dressing up (makeup, hairdo and all) as an american diner waitress. Adorable! I thought this place was new but found out after asking the man behind the counter, that they have been opened for approximately 2 years.
It was around 8pm when I entered this tiny store and found myself waiting in line to make an order. Many of the seats were taken but luckily there were seats outside. “No cutlery required” was clearly displayed on their menus and it was good to know that they had gluten free crepes available. I had a quick look at foursquare tips for Doughbox Diner and many recommended the Cheesy Chorizo. I knew I had to try that dish along with other sweet and savoury delights.
Cheesy Chorizo – Spanish chorizo sausage, onion, fresh tomato, cheese ($10). This savoury crepe was devine. I highly recommend this dish if you visit Doughbox Diner. This salty and cheesy goodness made my day!
Wicked Dough Box – Nutella, banana, strawberries, tim tam, milo, marshmallows, whipped cream ($12). Now on to sweet crepes. I understand this doesn’t sound and look very healthy but I tried to justify the fact that it had fruits… and fruits are healthy… right? Yum!
Chocolate Valentine – Nutella, Belgian chocolate and Bacio gelato, fresh strawberries, homemade chocolate fudge sauce, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles ($12). Belgian waffles time! By this third dish, I couldn’t finish it all. It was enjoyable and the homemade chocolate fudge sauce made it memorable but it was game over for me.
Doughbox Diner also serves gelato, coffee, tea and Garlo’s pies. There is a $10 minimum for eftpos transactions, $1 surcharge per credit card transaction and they do not split bills.
Remember, get the cheesy chorizo!
